A variable is a placeholder. Write "Hello {user}", and if Maya uses it, the bot says "Hello Maya". Keep both braces exactly as shown; an unknown variable is left as literal text. Add a "|" and some text inside any variable for a default when it comes back empty: {touser|everyone} says "everyone" when nobody was named.
